"For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me." — Matthew 25:42-43

Jesus tells us that when we feed the hungry, we are serving Him. In Matthew 25, He makes this clear: whatever we do for the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for Him. "I was hungry and you gave me food" (Matthew 25:35).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the works of mercy are "charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities" (CCC 2447). Feeding the hungry is the first corporal work of mercy — actions we take to help others with their bodily needs. This isn't just about giving someone a meal. It's about recognizing Christ in every hungry person and responding with love and generosity.

What This Work of Mercy Means

A Call to Serve Christ

When we feed the hungry, we serve Christ Himself. Jesus identified so closely with the poor that He said whatever we do for them, we do for Him. This isn't a metaphor — it's a spiritual reality.

Loving Our Neighbor

Feeding the hungry is one of the most practical ways we love our neighbor. It addresses a real, immediate need — someone who is without food. It's an act of mercy that anyone can participate in, regardless of their circumstances.

"The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, and forgiving are spiritual works of mercy. Feeding, sheltering, clothing, and visiting are corporal works of mercy."

— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2447
